Frequently Asked Questions

Who can receive a wish?

To receive a wish from the Chicago Chapter of A Special Wish Foundation, the child must live in the greater Chicago-land area or receive treatment at an area hospital. Three criteria must be met: the person may not be over the age of 20; they must be diagnosed by a physician with a life-threatening condition; and they may not have had a wish granted by any other wish granting organization at any other time. ASW Chicago does not discriminate based on race, gender, nationality or ethnicity.

When should I apply for a wish?

We encourage families to complete the application as soon as possible after the diagnosis. This will bring anticipation and excitement during the uncertain times ahead.

Does my child have to be terminally ill to be considered for a wish?

No. We focus on hope for a full recovery. Many of our past wish recipients attend our family fun days years and years after their wish was granted! The child's doctor needs only to indicate that the child's diagnosis is considered to be life-threatening. Unfortunately, we are unable to grant wishes to children with a chronic, but not life-threatening, conditions.

What is the most requested wish?

Special wishes are only limited to the imagination of the child. Most wishes granted fall into four categories. "Special Place" wishes involve travel. "Special Gift" wishes provide material goods such as shopping sprees, room makeovers, computers or televisions. "Special People" wishes allow the child to meet his or her hero, be it a sports personality, politician, or entertainer. "Special Times" wishes create memories through parties whether they are for a birthday, reunion or other special event.

What if my child cannot communicate because of age or condition?

We will work with your family and your family's support team (health care professionals, social workers, religious officials and /or school staff) as necessary to determine an appropriate wish based on the child's chronological and developmental age as well as their medical and social requirements.

Are there any restrictions on a wish?

We are unable to grant wishes such as motorized vehicles, in-ground pools or hot tubs, or international travel. We also do not grant wishes such as medical equipment, home improvements or cash. We cannot pay for medical expenses or funeral arrangements.

Who may participate in the wish?

Every attempt is made to include the child's immediate family residing in the same home, under the age of 21. If the wish child is an only child, they are allowed a companion also participate in the wish. If the parent is a single parent, they may also bring a support person if necessary. We will also permit a health care professional to accompany the child if it is deemed a medical necessity.

Is there a specific date our family must do the wish?

We work with your family to determine what meets your schedule. Occasionally, some outside factor might require some flexibility in your schedule (in a meet and greet wish for example), but we do our best to work with your timing needs.

How much does a wish cost?

Each wish varies depending on the type of wish (travel vs. shopping spree for example) and how many people are participating. Because many of our wishes involve travel, the average cost of a wish would be $4,000. However, we are able to reduce that cost through the active solicitation of in-kind contributions.

Is there an income requirement to receive a wish?

No. We never discuss your family financial situation.

Will my family have any financial responsibility for the wish?

All expenses including travel, lodging, food and spending allowances are provided by the foundation through donations, fundraising efforts and in-kind contributions.

Can my family or company contribute?

Of course! Corporate giving campaigns or company foundations are welcome to sponsor your wish or do a general donation. Individuals may donate in memory of a loved one or in honor of a birthday, wedding, anniversary or other special event.

They can designate that the funds be used towards your wish or put into the general wish granting budget.

How many wishes does A Special Wish Foundation grant each year?

Hundreds of wishes are granted annually by the Foundation across the United States. Historically, the Chicago chapter has granted between 8 and 12 wishes per year, and hopes to grow that number each year.
